Issues to Note When Installing the Foundation for a Gantry Machining Center

Longmen machining center This refers to a machining center in which the spindle’s Z-axis is perpendicular to the worktable. The overall structure is that of a large-scale machining center machine tool, featuring a gantry frame composed of twin columns and a top beam. A crossbeam is located between the twin columns, making this type of machine particularly well-suited for machining large workpieces and workpieces with complex geometries.

Large castings such as the workbench, bed, columns, crossbeam, and slide block are made of either cast iron or welded components. The internal cavities of these castings feature a honeycomb-like composite structure with an advanced design. All components undergo aging treatment and secondary tempering to eliminate residual internal stresses, stabilize the material properties, and ensure both the consistent machining accuracy of workpieces and the long service life of the machine tool. After about six months of normal use, recheck whether the level has changed. To maintain the machining accuracy and service life of the gantry machining center, strict requirements must be met for its foundation installation. Below is a brief introduction to the foundation installation requirements for gantry machining centers.
1. Basic selection requirements for gantry machining centers: Based on the foundation installation drawing, select an appropriately sized space for installing the gantry machining center. The stability of the installation foundation should not negatively affect the machine tool’s accuracy; however, to prevent vibrations from other mechanical equipment from being transmitted to the machine tool via the floor, the foundation must possess both stability and vibration isolation properties.
2. When laying the foundation for a gantry machining center, the following points should be taken into consideration: (1) To facilitate maintenance and inspection, adequate space should be left next to the machine tool’s installation location. (2) For the installation and maintenance of the gantry machining center, there should be at least 500 mm of clearance between the top of the machine tool and the crane. (3) Sufficient space must be provided for loosening and clamping workpieces. (4) When installing the gantry machining center, sufficient maneuvering space must be available for setting up the machine tool.
3. The foundation installation of the gantry machining center shall meet the following requirements: (1) The concrete must be free of cracks. (2) The concrete’s compressive strength at low pressure shall be 1800 N/cm², and its tensile strength shall be 180 N/cm². (3) The ground’s bearing capacity shall exceed 5 tons per square meter. (4) Shock-absorbing materials shall be added around the concrete.

With the exception of the manual loading of raw workpieces, all other machining processes can be performed automatically by the CNC machine tool. When combined with automated loading and unloading systems, such centers become essential components of unmanned factories. CNC machining significantly reduces the physical workload of operators and improves working conditions. Moreover, it eliminates auxiliary operations such as marking lines, multiple clamping and positioning steps, and inspection procedures, thereby effectively boosting production efficiency.
