  Today, machine tool manufacturers are introducing new products to help toolmakers and grinding shops improve efficiency and reduce costs. To enhance the utilization rate of tool grinders and lower labor costs, automation is receiving increasing attention. Meanwhile, by developing advanced software, machine tools’ operational capabilities can be expanded, enabling cost-effective scheduling of production even in scenarios involving small batch sizes and short delivery cycles. In addition, increasing the power of tool grinders allows them to meet a wider range of demands and broaden the spectrum of grinding tool specifications.

  The future development of CNC tool grinders is mainly reflected in three aspects:

  1. Automation.

  When tool manufacturers produce new tools in large batches, they enjoy high efficiency. However, tool-grinding shops don't have such favorable conditions; only automation can address their efficiency challenges. Tool-grinding machine manufacturers don't require machines to operate unattended—they simply hope that a single operator can manage multiple machines, thereby keeping costs under control.

  2. High precision.

  Many manufacturers prioritize reducing machining time as their primary goal, but some place great importance on part quality—such as manufacturers of high-precision tools and medical components. With advancements in tool-grinding machine technology, newly developed tool-grinding machines can now ensure extremely tight tolerances and excellent surface finish.

  3. Application software development.

  Perhaps due to considerations of programming and operational safety, the CNC systems and application software used in general tool-grinding machines tend to be less open. For example, most systems do not allow users to write their own programs to drive probe-based measurement tools or to read measurement results as variables. This significantly limits the ability of professional tool-grinding service providers to grind non-standard or modified tools, preventing them from approaching grinding tasks with the same freedom and creativity they would bring to manual equipment, based on their own experience. Since these service providers acquire a wide variety of cutting tools from the market, flexibility and openness are particularly important.

  Today, factories are increasingly seeking higher levels of automation in tool-grinding operations. Regardless of batch sizes, the key to success lies in achieving flexibility. The growing importance of software stems from the dwindling number of workers capable of manually operating complex tools on tool-grinding machines. Moreover, manual tool grinding struggles to meet the modern machine tools’ demands for cutting speeds and precision. Compared to CNC grinding, manual grinding often results in lower quality and consistency of cutting edges. This is because, during manual grinding, the tool rests against a support plate, and the grinding wheel’s direction of rotation points toward the cutting edge, leading to burr formation along the edge. In contrast, CNC grinding does not rely on a support plate during operation; the grinding wheel’s direction is deliberately offset from the cutting edge, thus preventing the formation of edge burrs.

  The functionality of a tool grinder determines the importance of its product quality. A high-quality grinder can help our projects proceed more smoothly, but the consequences of poor quality are all too obvious. Therefore, we should be extra vigilant when selecting and purchasing one.
