As a machine tool used for grinding metalworking tools, the tool grinder places high demands on the rigidity, precision, and flexibility of the machine tool itself, in order to meet the diverse and complex requirements of tool grinding.

Currently, most of the tool grinders widely used in China were developed primarily for grinding conventional high-speed steel tools. These grinders have relatively low design specifications, and their machine quality fails to meet today’s market demands. Moreover, due to the specific characteristics of tool grinder machining and operation, it is often necessary to repeatedly disassemble and reassemble various attachments, which is time-consuming, reduces precision, and places high demands on operator skill levels. As a result, these grinders are not well-suited for grinding various high-precision cemented carbide tools. This has led to robust sales of imported five-axis CNC tool grinders in recent years.

Today, with the increasingly widespread use of machining centers, the technological upgrading of the defense industry, the localization of imported machine tool accessories, the robust growth of the automotive industry, and the socialization of accessory manufacturing and service brought about by the separation of primary and ancillary operations, China has seen a substantial increase in the number of CNC grinding machines it imports, and this trend is exhibiting strong growth momentum. At CIMT, which is held twice a year, only two or three manufacturers used to participate as non-production equipment exhibitors. However, in 2005, as many as 18 foreign companies brought machine tools with similar prices and performance levels to compete for the Chinese market.

The application of CNC tool grinders in China has gone through the following three stages:

First, in technical renovation projects undertaken by defense industry enterprises, in order to repair and sharpen high-quality tools used in imported machining centers, the state has invested in importing tool-grinding machine tools and equipment to meet production needs or to serve as a technological reserve. These machine tools are typically used for manufacturing and grinding small- to medium-batch, high-precision tools. They are also employed in the manufacture and modification of non-standard tools, such as conical ball-end mills for machining integral turbine blades and cavity-forming milling cutters for aeroengine interiors. Due to industry-specific and system-related factors, the scope of use for these machine tools is often limited to a single workshop or enterprise, resulting in low utilization efficiency.

Second, from 2001 to 2002, China’s automotive industry experienced rapid development. Under pressure to improve production efficiency and reduce manufacturing costs, automobile engine plants, diesel engine plants, chassis and axle plants, and transmission plants—having accumulated certain financial resources—urgently needed grinding equipment that was both reasonably priced and highly automated. Such equipment could be used for grinding and precision machining a large volume of single-type tools, including diamond-coated drill bits (internal-cooling alloy drill bits), step drills, gun drills, and gear-hobbing cutters. With the rapid growth of the machinery industry, the market has seen strong demand for high-quality alloy tools, and there is growing calls for the localization of premium imported tools. This has created excellent business opportunities for many new tool-grinding machine enterprises.

Third, starting from 2003, these enterprises became strong buyers of the third batch of CNC tool grinders and demonstrated excellent marketing capabilities. These machines are primarily used for manufacturing standard alloy tools in small to medium batches, and even large-scale production, as well as for repairing and recycling such tools, thus marking the third stage in the application of CNC tool grinders in China.
